The tranquil setting of the cemetary at the foot of the mountain

behind the Museum

The names of Charlotte and Sarah indicating the site of their grave

The Old Parsonage originally build as a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in 1828

The small tombstone (in centre with stone on the lid) where Sarah Ann Bruton

and Charlotte Ann Howard lie together - they were probably cousins as S

arah's oldest sister Charlotte married Edward Ford Howard, and at the time

of their deaths were five years old and two years old respectively

The inscription on the tombstone has weathered severely but with the

kind assistance of the curator of the Somerset East Museum, Mr Emile Badenhorst,

the following inscription can be deciphered on the lid of the tomb;

In memory of

Charlotte Ann Howard

who departed this life the

26th November 1840

Aged 2 years and 7 months

And

Sarah Ann Bruton

who departed this life the

2nd of December 1840

Aged 5 years and 4 months

(kn...) the ... beneath the mouldering (sod...?)

( ... ) children sleep to memory (dear?)

Who, living, lived alike to God

And dying were united here
